Sofia's city centre is an eclectic mix of architectural styles, largely rebuilt after WWII bombings and complete with a yellow brick boulevard. The city is compact and diverse; a great place to get your bearings before heading off to discover the real Bulgaria.
The city has certainly been smartened up over recent years, and Sofians hope EU membership will bring more lasting benefits.
Sofia's continental climate is generally favourable. Sofia can empty in summer and winter as Bulgarians migrate between the Black Sea and the ski resorts, with average daytime highs of around 28°C (82°F) in July and August and 3°C (37°F) from December to February.
